Date for Ambubachi mela 2022
The Ambubachi Mela is returning after a hiatus of two years because of the Covid-19 pandemic. This year the Mela will be conducted from June 22 to June 26. However, the priests are concerned that it might lead to widespread Covid-19 cases.
In 2019 a total of 25 lakh devotees visited the temple to celebrate the festival which was the largest in the festival’s history. The Ambubachi Mela is one of the biggest festivals all over India and is probably the biggest in all of Assam. It is celebrated in recognition of the yearly menstruation course of goddess Kamakhya. This Mela continues for four days and during this time period the temple remains closed. It is believed that goddess Kamakhya rests for three days. The devotees restrict themselves from doing certain things like not cooking, not performing Puja or reading holy books, etc. On the fourth day, the temple doors are reopened and Prasad is distributed.
