This festival is celebrated among Hindus in India, Nepal, and other countries. Bhai Duj is celebrated on the last day of the five-day-long Diwali or Tihar festival.

It is also celebrated as “Yam Dwitiya” in the southern part of India.

The origin of this auspicious day is associated with some Hindu mythology. It is believed that Lord Krishna went to visit his sister Subhadra after killing the demon Narakasura.

His sister Subhadra warmly welcomed Sri Krishna with flowers and sweets to make the occasion special.

Sister Subhadra applied the ceremonial “Tilak” to the forehead of her brother Sri Krishna and from there the festival of “Bhai Duj” was born.

Another legend concerns Yama, the god of death, and his sister Yamuna.

It is believed that Yama met his beloved sister Jamuna on the second day of the new moon. Therefore, from that day onwards, this occasion was celebrated as “Yamadvitey” or “Yamadvitya” throughout the country.

Meaning and Significance-

There is a literal meaning attached to the Bhai Duj festival. It consists of two words – “Bhai” means brother and “Duj” means the second day after the new moon.

The day on which it is celebrated.

This day has special significance in the lives of brothers and sisters. Bhai Duj is an auspicious occasion to celebrate the strong bond between two brothers and sisters of the opposite sex.

Sisters invite brothers and sisters to their homes to prepare their favorite dishes. The sisters prayed to God for the brothers to win against all calamities and misfortunes and for their longevity.

Rice flour seat:

According to tradition, a square seat is made of rice flour for the brother to complete the ceremony. The brother sits in this seat during the tilak ceremony.

Molly Thread:

The thread is considered the most religious and protective thread of Hinduism. It acts like a protective band for the masses and brings good vibes to the human body when tied to it.

Like Rakhi, this thread protects the brother from danger and curiosity and attracts positive energy.

Bhai Dooj 2022, Start your day on Bhai Duj by following the steps below –

The brother covers his head with a new handkerchief and sits on a seat prepared by his sisters made of rice flour.

Sisters give crystallized sugar, sumkhi, black chow, sumkhi, fruits to brothers and sisters before performing aarti.

Using pooja thali and a lit Diya, the sisters perform aarti and pooja to their brothers and put roli tilak and rice on their foreheads.

After performing Aarti and Tilak ceremonies, the brothers gave special Bhai Duj gifts to the sisters and sought blessings from the elders.
